A large dump in a village near Berlin used from 1928 to 1945. Due to wild boars, treasure hunters, and weather, evidence of the past is coming back to light again.
In the neighboring village, three bronze sculptures by Arno Breker, the sculptor of the Nazis, created between 1928 and 1942. Before the Russian occupation in 1945 they were dumped in a nearby lake. Pulled out of the depths in 1990 they now appear unsightly and pockmarked.
My grandfather carried his camera during the German military campaign in Russia. His photos are a bizarre mixture of summer camp and the cruelty of war.
